Washington State’s first Okanogan Valley Winery

THE REGION ♦ THE WINERY
Okanogan Estate & Vineyards is located in Oroville, Washington, a turn of the century gold mining town, just five miles south of the Canadian Border on U.S. Highway #97 and minutes from British Columbia’s renowned Okanagan Valley wine region. Due to the northern location, the winery is truly unique to the State of Washington. It was founded in the year 2000 and was the first winery to open on the United States side of the Okanogan Valley. There are currently two new wineries just opening in Oroville and a third one slated to open in 2007. Over seventy (70) Canadian wineries in British Columbia operate within 100 miles of Oroville. The main difference between the two wine regions is the spelling: in Washington State it is spelled “OKANOGAN” and in British Columbia it is spelled “OKANAGAN”. The winery currently produces approximately 6,000 -8,000 cases annually.
THE VINEYARDS ♦ THE CLIMATE
The winery owns and operates estate vineyards and all of the grapes are grown locally. Washington State’s Okanogan Valley lends itself to ideal growing conditions due to the hot, arid, desert-like climate and well-drained, gravelly, sandy loam soil. The mineral and steely characteristics found in the hand crafted wine, mirror the trademark soil profile and exhibit an old-world style. The American and Canadian vineyards are planted a half-mile apart on the sandy benches of the sunny, southeast facing slopes at the edges of Lake Osoyoos. The rocky desert sage mountains that border the narrow valley and the series of lakes have a significant influence on the climate, as they entrap warmer temperatures in the winter and spring and provide cooler night-time temperatures in the summer and fall.
THE WINEMAKER
Okanogan Estate & Vineyards Winemaker, Mike Buckmiller has overseen the estate vineyards and winemaking from the initial plantings and inaugural crush, to the current crop and production. Mike has worked in the horticulture industry since 1975 and has been a Commercial Agricultural Consultant since 1996. Born and raised in the Okanogan Valley, he has extensive knowledge of the growing region and terroir. To further his knowledge of viticulture and enology, Mike attended courses at University of California, Davis.
He has a profound commitment to developing vineyards with grape varietals that are well suited for the individual site and a desire to produce exceptional wines that depict the unique regional characteristics of the Okanogan Valley. Mike’s passion and dedication is expressed in each of his wines with traditional flavors of the grape, yet a distinct personality of maker and region that unconditionally defines Okanogan Estate & Vineyards wines.
